How to use the Word Counter
- Type in the box, or paste text from another document.
- The counts update as you type. No button needed.
- Use Copy text to copy everything in the box, or Clear to start again.
How the counts work
- Words are groups of letters or numbers separated by spaces, the same way most word processors count them. A dash or symbol on its own isn't counted. For languages written without spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, your browser's built-in word rules are used.
- Characters include letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces and line breaks. An emoji counts as one character.
- Sentences end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Abbreviations such as “Mr.” can occasionally be counted as the end of a sentence.
- Paragraphs are lines that contain text. Blank lines aren't counted.
- Reading and speaking time are estimates based on 230 words per minute for reading and 130 words per minute for speaking aloud. Real speeds vary a lot from person to person.
Why does another app show a different number?
Different tools follow slightly different rules. One might count “e-mail” as one word and another as two, or include line breaks in the character count. Small differences are normal. If you're writing to a strict limit, check with the tool that will enforce it, such as your school's submission system or the social media app.
